Statement

Siwei Xu uses sculpture, performance, and video as his primary means of artistic expression.Through a combination of originalsculptural materials and found objects, he creates a retrospective examinationof prehistoric sculpture, liberating found objects from their functionalcontext to be used within a sculpture’s aesthetic experience. Additionally, byincorporating video into his installations, he creates abstract spatialcompositions within the realms of 2D illusion and 3D objects, viewers enter a quasi-dreamlikestate, allowing them to construct meaning within the ruins of form.

Within the realms of sculpture and video, the human figure remains a constant motif in Siwei Xu's oeuvre. He situates itwithin diverse contexts, altering its proportions, dimensions, or quantities(ranging from an abundance of replicated body parts to a single footprint) toinvestigate the dynamics between the "self" as a subject and various "others"across a spectrum of scenarios; while contemplating the self within theseintricate relationships. Acknowledging the nuanced, multifaceted nature ofhumanity that defies simplistic definitions, Siwei Xu's practice is systematic,a continuous endeavor to define the significance of humans as natural entities, political beings, cultural symbols, and more, from an array of relationalperspectives.

Similar to his continuous exploration ofthe theme of humanity, Siwei Xu's practice is an ongoing accumulation process, hiscurrent research delves into how to establish multiple relationships withingallery spaces and create artworks that connect with the audience beyondgallery confines.
